The Addition and Subtraction of #ROW80

October 12, 2014
Written by adrianjsmith

Well it happened, and it happened a lot more quickly than I thought it would. I didn’t write yesterday, at all. I got on the computer in the morning, made up two blog posts for my review blog and one for this blog and then I got off, went and sat on the couch and watched Raising Hope the rest of the day. Literally, the rest of the day and half of the night. *head desk*

I really did need the break though. I’ve been going, going, going for about three weeks, and I really just needed a day where no brain power was necessary. It was beautiful, and it was amazing. However, today is Sunday, which is the start of the work week for me, so that means I get to dive right back into work.

Here are the goals.
1. Write 1667 words a day, like NaNo, continue this until my two books are written and at least one short story companion piece. This should take me through to mid-December. If not, I’ll add in a third book to start.

Wednesday — 8318
Thursday — 2288
Friday — 4736
Saturday — 0000

So I made progress. I’m still working on making up for my word count from a few weeks ago when I didn’t write anything for 3 or 4 days (sickness, so doesn’t really count as a break), which is why my word count is high on a few days. I’ll still be making up, today and probably tomorrow. Sunday and Monday on my Wednesday update (that’s a lot of days right there), will have higher word counts. But this novel will be finished on the 18th if I stick to it. That’ll give me time to work on a short story before NaNoWriMo.

2. Actually check in each day I’m supposed to check-in, even if I finish my goals.

This post, which I almost skipped because it’s Sunday and the start of my work week and a morning thing. =P

3. Edit at least one chapter a week on something. Will start with Unbound and a copy-edit I have due this month.

I edited a short I wrote ages ago for my publisher (who just wanted to read it), I edited chapter 2 of Unbound, I beta’d a chapter for a fellow author, and I copy-edited a chapter for a fellow author.

Now here comes the fun part. I realized I needed to add in some new goals, since they’re projects I really need to finish before the new year. I totally forgot one of those goals though, so maybe by Wednesday I’ll remember. The goal I’m adding, is not writing/reading related. =P

4. Crochet one round of border on the blanket for Katherine (P.S. I started this blanket three years ago, and it really needs to get finished).

thanks all folks! Catch you on Wednesday! =P

Web of Lies – The Untangling

For the record, this brings me no pleasure to write. I had hoped and prayed that Adam Gaffen, who is a self-proclaimed writer of LGBTQ+ science fiction, mostly sapphic in nature, would be the one writing this and not me, but his attempt at it has been tepid, and I...

You know what one fun thing is about having a kid in school and in kindergarten? He has no understanding of normal school things.  We've switched Spidey through a lot of daycares, some by choice, others not. His first one closed about 9 months after he started...

Your word counts are just… like… bananas.

Sometimes you need a day off. I think I’m going to end up with one today to recharge, feed the muse before he gets all cranky, yadda yadda.

My day off from writing was supposed to be today….instead I need to write 3 while chapters to be caught up to where I’m supposed to be. Bleh. I’m thinking it needs to be two today and two tomorrow. Sprinting tonight if you’re around!!

I might be. My husband’s working tonight, but it will depend on whether I get much beta reading done during the day. Also, I was awake before 5 this morning, so my brain might be mush by tonight. 🙂

How is it even possible to write that many words? Someday I will have word counts that high…maybe not until my kiddos are in school…but seriously, someday my RoW80 goals will include word counts like what you are currently smashing out.

I treat writing very much like a job, so I make sure to spend at least an hour a day doing it. I also type fast, which helps. Kiddos in school/less distractions all around is probably very helpful! I try to tell my husband to make himself sparse when I write but usually I just wake up before he does to write then.

I need to read more Vinge, A Fire Upon the Deep was fantastic and still echoes in my head occasionally. Recently finished Girl With Dragon Tattoo and reading through the latest Pratchett – though I’ve forgotten to note them.

Your word counts are fantastic! Well done! I think because of that you shouldn’t even worry about having a day just chilling out. Well deserved. Good luck for this week, although somehow I sense you won’t need it!

aww thanks! My goal is to still write daily, although I’m figuring out I do need at least one day off a week though. I didn’t write yesterday either, so that means I’m making up for two days this week, which will not be fun. That’s part of why my word counts are high…trying to make up for days I was supposed to write and didn’t write.

      Thanks for stopping by!

Your writing productivity is inspirational! So is your willingness to take that day off — and then to jump right back to work, for writing IS work. Maybe your strategy of having several projects going means you can move easily between each one AND keep writing. I will take away from your post simply that drive to keep writing. May your week be a good one!

    • Adrian

I actually only keep one project going at once. At least in the writing stage. If I’m writing one, I will edit another. I do very much treat writing like a job, as I think I should. I does pay me, even if not well.

      Thanks for stopping by!
