WIPpet Wednesday! Sept 11, 2013

September 11, 2013
Written by adrianjsmith

So last week, I didn’t get many comments. It was suggested that perhaps this was due to the small WIPpet that I posted. This week you’ll get more. 20 paragraphs 9 + 11 = 20 of what immediately follows last weeks post. I haven’t actually written anything in over a week *head desk* so finding something to post on was rather difficult. It’s been a crazy, insane week for me, meaning I started a new job and have 4 papers due for school along with quite possibly *cough* dating someone *cough cough*.

Here we go. I’ve included the few lines from last week. What you need to know is that Emma and Joel are driving to her old apartment to pick up some things. The few lines from last week are NOT included in my actual count and most of the paragraphs are dialogue, so this shouldn’t be too long.

“Why are you here, Caroline?”

She cringed inwardly at the name and chewed on the inside of her lip.

“I’m not sure what you mean.”

“Why are you at the house? Why did you come find us?”

Emma’s heart started to pound, but she shoved the feeling of panic down and took a deep breath. She needed to remain in control and not be cornered into telling him the truth. If anyone should find out, Molly should first. Emma turned to look at him and smiled.

“It was an accident.”

“You do realize that I know when you lie, right?”

“Umm…” Emma’s eyes widened as she stared at him.

“I’m an Empath.”

“Oh.”

Taking a deep breath and holding it her lungs until it burned, Emma blanched. She hadn’t expected Molly to keep an Empath so close at hand. That certainly complicated matters as he could tell when she lied and read her emotions—both of which she did not want him to do in any capacity.

“So yeah, you’ve been lying from the start. Care to tell the truth?”

“I don’t think it’s any of your damn business,” Emma spat back. She crossed her arms tighter and stared out the side window, willing herself to not respond to anything else that he said.

“Caroline—”

“Stop. Just stop it!”

Emma flung her hands out and curled her fingers into fists before pounding them onto her thighs. She’d lost her resolve. Grinding her teeth together, she seethed.

“It’s none of your business why I was base jumping. I was, and I crash landed in the wrong spot. You guys were nice enough to lend a hand. That’s all that happened.”

“Yes and no.”

“Damn it, Joel.”

“Stop leaving stuff out.”

“Stop the car.”

“What?”

Emma started to twist in her seat, unbuckling her belt as Joel took a right turn and tried the door handle. It was locked. She started to wrench it back and forth, using the full force of her body to try and get it opened. Joel was saying something, but she didn’t understand him. Emma swallowed scream after scream until she couldn’t anymore. She let out a feral shout before jerking around to glare at him.

Joel was finally slowing down and pulling to the curb. Emma lunged for the lock and pushed open the door, jumping out of the van before he’d come to a complete stop. She ran to the end of the block and turned the corner. She had to get away. She saw red as she aimed for the alley way.

“Caroline!”

If you would like to join in the amazingness that is WIPpet Wednesday, all you have to do is write a post with your current WIP (Work In Progress) and post it. Then link it up here and go read everyone elses. Love goes to MyRandomMuse for hosting this each week!

#ROW80 update and progress on goals

This has been a crazy hard month for us, started really end of January, and it's looking to continue to be another rough month. My spouse was fired, we're switching kids' daycare because of abuse issues, I've been sick with some cold, stomach bug through the house,...

Open when you get fired… #loveletters #openwhen

Oh love, My heart breaks for you. This isn't what you wanted or what I wanted. And it is completely out of our hands. Let me hold you, love. Let me hold you while you cry, while you curse, while you run worries around your head so much that you don't know where to...

Thank you for sharing more! I didn’t get around to everyone’s posts last week, and didn’t get to comment on all of the ones I read, and I think a few other people were having a hard time last week, so that might have something to do with the lack of comments. I really liked the tension and emotion in this excerpt. 🙂

      Thanks!

ooooh, this was good! Base jumping I assume means mountain climbing/repelling. What was she doing, and why doesn’t she want the others to know? I’m with Kate, I liked the emotion building in this scene. Emma/Caroline’s mounting anxiety pulled me along. I wanted to keep reading.

    • Adrian

She wasn’t BASE jumping in the mountains =P

Trying to lie to an empath? Yes I can see the frustration in that…

    • Adrian

Yeah. Massive fail on her part. Lol

We’ve got a theme going this week of building emotion and tension and hidden agendas. Very cool. And, man, that has to suck — trying to keep a story straight and then finding out you’ve been lying to an empath who pretty much knew all along. Foot in mouth and back pedaling called for. Or, on the other hand, bolting has proven effective as well.

    • Adrian

      Lol yup

As a reformed bolter who still feels the twitching of leg muscles when threatened, I so understand this!

Last week was a busy and mostly offline one for me. I fell deep into editing notes for Chameleon’s Dish, and, when I came up for air, I was with family or working out or moving furniture….

Sorry I missed you then, happy to get here this week. I want to know more about Emma, and the Empath…I, too, am the intuitive sort, but not on that level….

Oh, and *cough cough* cool about the *cough* possible dating. =)

    • Adrian

      Lol!!

  7. Kate Frost

Fantastic emotion in this scene! The tension within Emma really builds in the paragraph third from the end. Great!

    • Adrian

      Thanks!!

She’s freaking out on cue lol shes a manipulative little bugger

Last week was the first week of school for a lot of people–your lack of comments could have been because of that. I know it was really hard for me to keep up with all the posts last week too.

As for the extract, I confess I was confused a bit at first. I won’t even try to imagine what “base jumping” is. I don’t think you mean she’s free basing…

In the end, I loved it. Seeing red…. I suspect Emma has some shapechanging going on.

Last week was week 3 or 4 of school for me…This week is my insanity with school because of the mass amount of stuff I’ve had to do. I haven’t had a moment to get through the WIPpets yet this week.

Extreme Base Jumping is when someone jumps from a cliff, generally a cliff, and glides down to the bottom. They wear a special suit that has wing like things by their arms so they’re basically free-falling at a slower speed. You can youtube it if you want, there’s vids all over the place with it.

I like what you suspect. =P

      • Eden

Ooh, sorry to hear about the chaos of the school situation for you, Adrian.

So that’s what it’s called. I know about cliff gliding; I just never knew that name for it.

        I aim to please. 😀

You always have such interesting scenes and so much going on! You are putting the character through their paces. Lots of emotion and intrigue.

Comments to my WIPpet for last week were low too. I just figured it was a hard week for people. That’s how its been for me. I tend to currently only have time to visit those that visit me and just ‘returning the favor” takes me two days.

    • Adrian

Yeah that’s me this week with visiting everyone. This week is better though least comment wise, not busy wise for me.

      I like random scenes =D

  10. Ruth Nestvold

Lots of emotional ups and downs in this scene, great! Love the problem with lying to an empath. 🙂

I don’t usually get around to everyone’s snippets, but I do always try to return the favor when someone stops by. Wippet Wednesday is a lot of fun, but it’s also takes a lot of time to read and comment on everything!

    • Adrian

Thanks! I appreciate you stopping by.

  11. Emily Witt

The phrase “That awkward moment when…” feels quite appropriate for this scene. I really enjoyed this one, lots of drama!

    • Adrian

      Thanks!
