The Only Constant…

I keep staring at my blank screen, trying to come up with a short story for this prompt. Nothing can conclude what I see or believe about change more than one simple sentence. It’s something that I’ve always believed to be true and that I know will guide my life as I continue to grow. This one thing has settled so many upset stomachs when I was anxious over what was happening, changes that were occurring in my household, and big decisions that I had to make.

Change is the only constant.

It’s something that is constant and always happening. We are always changing and making decisions. Even people who never seem to change, who are stuck in a rut and don’t want to change, are changed. They are altered and dragged along with the rest of society as culture moves and shifts. They are carried on the waves of time and the rivers of society.

Change is the only constant.

At a church I used to go to, we had a jar for change. I mean literal change in this case, but the motto stands as this: if you don’t like change, give it to us. While it was an amusing motto, with some disparity and hatred behind it, it remains that everyone has change. We raised hundreds of dollars with that jar, taking the spare change that no one wanted and doing something with it.

Change is the only constant.

If it is the only thing that is constant in our lives, what are we going to do with it? What are you going to do with your change, and how are you going to make a difference? In one of my classes, we are looking at our responses to the ostracized, the outcast, the oppressed and the impoverished. We are looking at where we have a response and where we are lacking. Are we going to pay it forward? Have dreams? Make a home for someone else? Are we going to be imaginative and inspired to do something beyond what we have already done? How are we going to be change?

  1. Adrian, thanks for writing this. Yes, it is. Whether we like it or not, change is our only constant, and we just have to move, just when we get comfortable! Linking this up for you, my site’s up and running again!

  2. Great post! Change is the only thing that we really can count on but it’s one of the main things that we resist!

We resist it in our circumstances, in others and often in ourselves. I think fear is driving the resistance. We want assurance and we find that in the familiar. For me personally, every time I embraced change in my life it ended up being the best experience ever…didn’t stop me from fighting it though! ;-)

    Human nature I suppose…

    • I’ve dealt with a lot of change in my life, and it’s almost to the point where I completely embrace it in certain circumstances. There is nothing to fear in it, and people need to realize that there isn’t fear in the unknown, it’s just a great mystery that needs to be seen.

Tell me what you think. I wanna know!
